چکیده

Cepstral normalization has been popularly used as a powerful approach to produce robust features for speech recognition. Good examples of approaches include the well known Cepstral Mean Subtraction (CMS) and Cepstral Mean and Variance Normalization (CMVN), in which either the first or both the first and the second moments of the Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) are normalized [1, 2]. Such approaches were extended previously to Higher Order Cepstral Moment Normalization (HOCMN) for normalizing moments with orders much higher than two [3]. Here we further extend HOCMN to a more generalized form with the generalized moment with noninteger orders defined in this paper. Extensive experimental results based on a newly defined development set for AURORA 2.0 indicated that not only HOCMN for integer moment orders can perform significantly better than the well-known approach of Histogram Equalization (HEQ), but some further improvements can be consistently obtained for almost all SNR values with non-integer moment orders. The theoretical foundation behind the approaches proposed here which explains why HOCMN can perform well and how the statistical properties of the distributions of the MFCC parameters are adjusted during the normalization processes were also discussed.

Improving the performance of MFCC for Persian robust speech recognition

The Mel Frequency cepstral coefficients are the most widely used feature in speech recognition but they are very sensitive to noise. In this paper to achieve a satisfactorily performance in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) applications we introduce a noise robust new set of MFCC vector estimated through following steps. First, spectral mean normalization is a pre-processing which applies to t...

Evaluation of modulation spectrum equalization techniques for large vocabulary robust speech recognition

Previous approaches for modulation spectrum equalization were evaluated only for the Aurora 2 small vocabulary task. We further apply these approaches on the Aurora 4 large vocabulary task. In the spectral histogram equalization (SHE) approach, we equalize the histogram of the modulation spectrum for each utterance to a reference histogram obtained from clean training data. In the magnitude rat...

Evaluation and Modification of Cepstral Moment Normalization for Speech Recognition in Additibe Babble Ensemble

The statistical properties of a speech feature could differ under the influence of noisy environments. These effects are common in mismatched environments such as additive background noise and reverberant environments. Normalization strategies are employed in speech recognition systems to compensate for the effects of environmental mismatch. This work explores the utilization of cepstral moment...

Speech Emotion Recognition Based on Power Normalized Cepstral Coefficients in Noisy Conditions

Automatic recognition of speech emotional states in noisy conditions has become an important research topic in the emotional speech recognition area, in recent years. This paper considers the recognition of emotional states via speech in real environments. For this task, we employ the power normalized cepstral coefficients (PNCC) in a speech emotion recognition system. We investigate its perfor...

Feature and distribution normalization schemes for statistical mismatch reduction in reverberant speech recognition

Reverberant noise has been a major concern in speech recognition systems. Many speech recognition systems, even with state-of-art features, fail to respond to reverberant effects and the recognition rate deteriorates. This paper explores the significance of normalization strategies in reducing statistical mismatches for robust speech recognition in reverberant environment. Most normalization wo...
